Ello experiences first major outage, blames DDoS attack (Update: Fixed)

Update: Ello is back. The company says the issue was resolved by blocking the offending IP addresses. Total outage time: about 45 minutes.

Social networking site Ello went down hard today. The new service has been available for just over a month, but already it is running into problems that many social networks experience in their early days.

Visiting any of the site’s pages currently results in the following error message: “The site is currently unavailable while we conduct some necessary maintenance. Follow along for any updates on our status page.”

Yet according to Ello’s status page page, the outage is not due to maintenance: “We are undergoing a potential denial of service attack.” The company started investigating the DDoS attack at 4:15 PM EST.

It’s possible that the error message on the site is the default one for when something goes wrong (the page title even says “Offline for Maintenance”), while the status page is giving more accurate information. Nonetheless, we have contacted Ello for more information and will keep you posted as we learn more.
