TikTok’s clever new feature dispenses with the ‘link in bio’ nonsense

When you’re watching a cooking TikTok, it can be annoying to manually note down the ingredients, or follow the link in the creator’s bio to see the recipe. However, the app has a nifty new feature that solves this problem.

TikTok released a function called Jump that lets creators use mini-apps with their videos. Here’s how it works: if the feature is enabled, you can include a link for showing stats, ingredients, a Wikipedia article, or a quiz.

For starters, TikTok has partnered with WhiskBreathwrkWikipediaQuizletStatMuse, and Tabelog for these app integrations. You can watch the feature in action here.

Soon BuzzFeedJumpropeIRL, and WATCHA will also have their own Jumps for events, movies, and articles. This makes it easy for content creators to link to resources that support what they’re saying.

App or link integration has been a huge hindrance when it comes to images or videos. On Instagram, you can only upload a link to your story if you have more than 10,000 followers. And for videos you’ll have to go the “link in the bio” route.

But this is not just limited to Instagram, it would be ideal to have this feature for videos on platforms like YouTube and Twitter. Imagine having these link links pop up when a company is doing a live announcement that provides further details. Another use case could be watching a travel video and opening links to all places mentioned in it to make your itinerary. The possibilities are endless.

We’re in a world where apps are endlessly copying each other’s features — and Jump is one I’d like to see cloned everywhere.
