Sharp’s new phone with a massive 1-inch sensor has me salivating

Sharp’s new phone with a massive 1-inch sensor has me salivating

Sharp’s newest flagship has a 1-inch camera sensor with Leica branding — and that’s probably enough to catch the attention of camera photography nerds. But it might be hard to get your hands on a unit as the Aquos R6 is limited to Japan for now.

The 1-inch 20-megapixel camera sensor is the largest in the smartphone world, beating the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra’s 1/1.12-inch sensor. This means that the phone’s camera will be able to absorb more light in a short amount of time, resulting in detailed photos even in low-light situations.

Interestingly, the phone only has a single rear camera — a departure from a multi-camera setup that’s common in this age’s phones.

The Aquos R6 is no slouch in other departments. It features a 6.6-inch screen with 2,730 x 1,260 resolution, 2,000 nits of max brightness, and 240Hz of refresh rate.

Specifications

  • Screen: 6.6-inch WUXGA+ Pro IGZO OLED screen; 1,260 x 2,730 resolution; 2,000 nits max brightness
  • Refresh rate: 240Hz
  • Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 888
  • RAM: 12GB
  • Rear camera: 20-megapixel camera with a 1-inch sensor; f/1.9
  • Front camera: 12.6-megapixel with f/2.3 aperture
  • Internal storage: 128GB
  • Security: In-screen fingerprint sensor
  • Battery: 5,000 mAh

Sharp’s latest device also has some neat features such as a location-aware hotspot and a dedicated Google Assistant button. The company claims that its Qualcomm powered in-screen fingerprint sensor provides the largest area for unlocking the phone.

The Sharp Aquos R6 is currently available only in Japan through network bundled plans with NTT Docomo and Softbank.
