New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg speaks at the 2012 BigApps Awards

New York City’s yearly BigApps competition offers developers $50k in cash for the best new apps that utilize the city’s ambitious open data policy to help improve the lives of residents, visitors and businesses. Finishing up its third year, you can now watch NY Mayor Mike Bloomberg’s full remarks on the event at the 3.0 award ceremony:

BigApps 3.0 continues NYC’s ongoing engagement with its developer community, building on the first two competitions with heaps of new data and prizes. Submissions could be for any kind of software app — Web, PC, mobile, or really any other software platform broadly available to the public. The public response was quite impressive, with nearly 100 teams fighting for the top spot. You can see a few of our favorite entries here.

If you’re a resident New Yorker or a visitor for this year’s Internet Week NY, there’s a must-see panel happening on Thursday, May 17th that’ll provide an inside look at all the civic hacking and resulting startups from the past three years of NY’s BigApps competition.

Just recently, we saw Bloomberg’s audacious invitation to Austin startups, NY taxi cabs outfitted with slick Square payment systems and iPads and new initiatives to bring WiFi and cellular reception into our uncomfortably humid subway stations. As you can see, it continues to be a very busy year for the city’s tech scene. Let’s keep it that way.
