7 tech jobs that let you use your skills to save the planet

Many of us want to be part of a greater vision to make the world a better place. Now, with major technologies tackling climate change, this is becoming a reality and many more of us can play our role in protecting the planet.

From carbon offsetting to renewable energy sources, desalination projects and improved transparency in our supply chains, environmental stewardship can be part of your career path. A report published in 2021 by the UN’s World Meteorological Organization (WMO) revealed that harmful CO2 concentration is now 50% higher than pre-industrial levels. It also found that the past seven years have been the highest on record.

As the world grapples with the ongoing climate crisis, the rush to solve the most pressing environmental issues and fill the roles needed to protect the planet is heating up. Without careful consideration for the technical skills needed to carry out this vital work, it will be impossible to steer countries towards a more sustainable path.

Below, we take a closer look at seven jobs where technical expertise is required to drive a sustainable future. And for many more open roles, check out the House of Talent Job Board.

Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG)

The 💜 of EU tech

Increasingly, we’re seeing businesses adding an ESG offering, driven by the need to facilitate growth in the long run, attract more talent, and the basic need to do good. For example, at Bloomberg, the ESG Product Manager — Climate, will be responsible for coordinating ESG product development efforts across Bloomberg. They’ll also develop a business plan for the company’s climate offering with clear success metrics.

Green IT advisors

Green IT advisors offer guidance on the environmental impact of companies’ IT systems, often providing clear pathways to a greener approach. This helps teams to spot opportunities to position themselves with optimal green technology solutions. Interested in working in this field? Deloitte is hiring Green IT advisors as it expands its ESG consulting teams. These roles help companies manage their environmental, social, and governance issues.

App developers

According to Statista, there are 6.4 billion smartphone users worldwide, a whopping 80% of the entire population. Companies like Applied Information Sciences are hiring app developers to create innovative technology solutions that will allow users to make greener lifestyle choices. From rewards for environmental consciousness to energy consumption solutions, green-friendly applications will continue to be developed at a rapid speed.

Data analysts

Tracking waste and capturing data are two ways in which technology plays a crucial role in making the packaging and recycling industry more sustainable. If you’re interested in playing a role in waste management and improving our environmental footprint, then evaluating these critical analytics enables you to vet the current system and get involved in the design of new, more green-friendly processes.

Supply chain analysts

Our archaic supply chain solutions are complex to understand. The more manpower we can put towards untangling these intersecting webs and evaluating potential sustainable opportunities, the better. Although traceability was once seen as an issue, today with access to more reliable data, companies that are already conscious about sustainability, like Tesla, can start to make the links from product source to distribution. As an analyst you can help others to make informed decisions when it comes to building the circular economies of the future.

Senior software developers

Developers of all kinds are needed to build the technology we will use to track, analyze, and create more sustainable lifestyles. And this goes across all industries.

For example, in the future, sustainable-conscious consumers will have high expectations for the fashion brands that they interact with. Join Vestiaire to get involved in the circular fashion movement. The company is looking for talented front-end engineers who want to contribute to developing a sustainable fashion industry.

Sustainable value chain decarbonisation

If you’re experienced in product design and passionate about helping companies develop efficient net-zero roadmaps, then Accenture is in need of your skills. As the Manager of Sustainable Value Chains Decarbonization, you’ll play a key role in delivering renewable energy transition solutions for a range of clients. From carbon footprint management systems to digital twinning to internal carbon pricing mechanisms, this role will entice you to explore all approaches when building technology for net-zero transition projects.

Leading companies on the House of Talent Job Board are on hiring sprees to cater to the growing demand for more sustainable products and services. Global brands are now taking their green initiatives seriously. Companies like Amadeus, KPMG, Voi Technology, and Thermondo are all investing heavily in R&D efforts to ensure they are playing their part in saving the planet.

From zero-waste policies to switching to renewables, every sector is deciding how it can contribute to a greener future. The greenwashing culture that existed to promote sustainability without action is no longer accepted by customers and many firms are beginning to realize the long-term positive impact of being environmentally friendly.
